Bills Would Streamline Physician Credentialing Process
Bills have been introduced in the state General Assembly that would improve the physician credentialing process.
Key provisions of Senate Bill 1046 and House Bill 1912 include:
- Requiring health plans to notify physicians of their application status within five days of receiving the application
- Allowing physician reimbursement during the credentialing process
- Requiring all health plans to accept the universal credentialing process through the Council for Affordable Quality Healthcare (CAQH)
There are only minor differences between SB 1046 and HB 1912, and the Pennsylvania Medical Society supports both bills.
Credentialing and re-credentialing of physicians can be an enormous administrative and financial burden on physicians seeking to be credentialed and practices bringing a new physician into the community.
This legislation also will ensure access to care for patients in the commonwealth and help to reduce patients’ out-of-pocket expenses.
