Physician Delegation Regulations

A physician with an unrestricted license may delegate to a health care practitioner or technician, the performance of a medical service under the following conditions—outlined in detail in section 18.402 of the Pennsylvania Code:

Auxiliary office personnel are dependent practitioners who work under the supervision of a licensed physician. Most are regulated by the State Board of Medicine. Below are links to each individual practitioner's guiding regulations.

  • 1. The delegation is consistent with the standards of acceptable medical practice.
    2. The delegation is not prohibited by the health care practitioner's guiding statutes or regulations.
    3. The physician has knowledge that the delegatee is competent to safely perform the medical service being delegated.
    4. The delegation does not create an undue risk to the patient being treated.
    5. The nature of the service and the delegation of the service has been explained to the patient and the patient does not object.
    6. The physician assumes the responsibility for the delegated medical service, including the performance of the service, and is available to the delegatee as appropriate.
