Some Former Residents Could Receive FICA Tax Refunds

Residents, hospitals, and medical schools who filed a refund request for FICA taxes paid prior to April 1, 2005, will now be getting those refunds.

In the 1990s, employers and residents began requesting refunds of the Social Security and Medicare taxes that they paid, according to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). These taxes are collectively called FICA taxes. The requests were filed under a student exception.
The claims were held while the IRS investigated whether residents qualified for the exception. The IRS has decided that residents do qualify for this exception, but only before April 1, 2005, when regulations were changed.

Within 90 days, the IRS will begin contacting those who filed a claim with instructions on how to claim the refund.
