Senate Republicans Unveil Health Plan

State Senate Republicans have announced their plan to expand health insurance coverage to the uninsured, answering proposals from Democrats in the House of Representatives and Gov. Ed Rendell.

The 15-bill HealthNET PA plan would provide insurance to 507,000 currently uninsured Pennsylvanians at a cost of about $100 million, Senate Republicans said in a news release June 10, 2008.

The Pennsylvania Medical Society is reviewing the details of the complex plan.

“While we are still in our initial review phase, we do believe that Pennsylvania’s great health care debate can now begin. Both sides have offered their plans,” Peter S. Lund, MD, president of the Pennsylvania Medical Society, said in a news release.

A quick review of the Senate Republican plan indicates that their model would involve financial help from the private sector.

It also does not link Mcare abatement extension to the HealthNet PA plan, an element that the State Society strongly supports.
