Change the State Legislature: Run for Office

Do you really want to make a difference for Pennsylvania medicine? Here’s an idea—why not run for the Pennsylvania House of Representatives or Senate?

In 2010, there will be elections in all 203 of the House districts and in the 25 even-numbered Senate districts.

But you’ll need to act quickly, because the deadlines are fast approaching.

To run for office, you must file a nomination petition to appear on the ballot in the May primary election. Petitions can be requested on the Department of State website

Petitions may be circulated to obtain signatures of registered voters in your district and filed with the state election bureau between Feb. 16 and March 9, 2010.

For more information, read the Department of State’s guide on running for public office and instructions for circulating nominating petitions.

Let the Pennsylvania Medical Society know if you are a physician running for any level of governmental office. We can help provide information on the political process and the Medical Society’s position on health care issues.

The American Medical Association offers nationally acclaimed training courses to help you learn how to run a campaign for office. A candidate workshop will be held from Feb. 19 to 21, and campaign school will be held from April 21 to 25.

You also can contact the AMA’s Washington, DC, at office (202) 789-7400 to get information about the candidate and campaign schools.
