AHRQ Offers Free DVDs to Help Prevent Childhood Obesity

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and the Department of Health and Human Services partnered with Discovery Networks to develop two DVD programs aimed at combating childhood obesity:

"Max’s Magical Delivery: Fit for Kids"

This fun, interactive DVD for children, ages 5–9, and their families, offers suggestions for:

  • Eating five fruits and vegetables per day.
  • Getting away from the TV and computer.
  • Being physically active indoors and outside.

A separate section provides parents with small, achievable steps to help encourage and implement these healthy habits in their children and themselves.

"Childhood Obesity: Combating the Epidemic—A DVD for clinicians"

This complementary DVD for clinicians addresses both prevention and treatment, as well as:

  • Covers screening and counseling for obese/overweight/at-risk children and their families.
  • Provides helpful clinical tools such as body mass index (BMI) measurement in children and tips for initiating and sustaining behavior change.
  • Contains educational materials eligible for CME credits.
