Primary Care Physicians: Join Our Fight Against Colon Cancer

Pennsylvania sees more cases of colon cancer and more deaths from colon cancer than many other states.

Screening rates are low despite the fact that most respondents to a recent Patient Poll from the Institute for Good Medicine at the Pennsylvania Medical Society said they knew some or all cancer screenings appropriate for their age group.

That’s why the Pennsylvania Medical Society and the Pennsylvania Division of the American Cancer Society have partnered to fight the deadly disease, which kills about 2,500 Pennsylvanians each year. One focus of the campaign is physician-led public education.

“Increasing patient awareness of colorectal cancer screenings is of great importance. We’re asking all of our physician members to talk to every patient over 50 years of age about the need for a screening,” said Daniel J. Glunk, MD, president of the Pennsylvania Medical Society.

Physicians can find resource and patient education materials in English and Spanish on the American Cancer Society website. Patients can find information on the Family Health and Wellness website.
