Physicians can download and print this series of free brochures for their Spanish-speaking patients on basic health concerns. They were produced using a grant from the Pennsylvania Medical Society (PAMED).
The series includes topics identified as core to the health needs of Latino populations by physicians and public health providers working directly with those communities in the Pittsburgh region. Unless otherwise indicated, all are available as printable PDFs.

Using a $5,000 grant from PAMED, the brochures were developed by the Consumer Health Coalition (CHC) in cooperation with the Allegheny County Medical Society and Spanish-speaking communities in western Pennsylvania. They were reviewed by physicians and other public health experts.
“Many Pennsylvania physicians are struggling to meet the health needs of growing Latino communities. Communication with these patients about basic health concerns is often the first step. We created this grant to provide seed money for local projects that find innovative ways to bridge communication gaps,” said Eric Gertner, MD, MPH.
Dr. Gertner is chair of the PAMED Executive Council on Patient Advocacy, which originated the grant concept. PAMED encourages physician practices throughout the state to use the materials within their patient populations.
Copies of the brochures have been distributed through the CHC community partners to the Latino community in western Pennsylvania. The community partners include: The Latino Family Center, Catholic Charities, Latino Engagement Group for SALUD, Birmingham Free Clinic, ESL Classes, The Birth Circle, and the Squirrel Hill Health Center. They were also made available at La Feria, a Latino Health Fair held earlier this year.
All materials are also available on the CHC website.
Another PAMED Grant for Healthy Living in Ethnic Communities will be handed out in fall 2010.
