Don’t Delay: New HIPAA Electronic Standards Right Around the Corner

Jan. 1, 2012, may seem like it’s a long way off, but there’s a lot to be done before the new HIPAA 5010 electronic transaction standards take effect on that date.

Providers, insurers, and vendors should begin work now to implement the new standards, according to the North Carolina Healthcare Information and Communications Alliance (NCHICA) and Workgroup for Electronic Data Interchange (WEDI).

Analysis, development, testing, and rollout will take all of the nearly three-year window allowed by the US Department of Health and Human Services, NCHICA and WEDI say.

The two nonprofits have developed an implementation timeline for the new electronic transaction standards. They also are at work on a timeline for implementation of the new ICD-10 codes, which take effect Oct. 1, 2013. The ICD-10 timeline should be published in the next six months.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services also offers an overview of HIPAA 5010 implementation.
