Pennsylvania Employee Health Benefits Cost More than Average

The per employee cost for employee health benefits for self-funded employers in Pennsylvania was higher than the national average in 2007, the most recent year for which data was available, according to a report from the Pennsylvania Medical Society (PAMED).

PAMED found that the average per employee cost for a Pennsylvania employee’s health benefits for self-funded employers is $8,264—3.5 percent more than the national average of $7,983. However, this is lower than seven other states in the region, except West Virginia and Virginia.

The Society also looked at the average three-tier mail order prescription co-pays for generic, brand formulary, and brand non-formulary prescription drugs.  Pennsylvania patients pay the national average of $18 for generic drugs, the national average of $41 for brand formulary drugs, and $5 above the national average of $69 for brand non-formulary drugs.

The report was one of three that resulted from a resolution at the Pennsylvania Medical Society’s 2008 House of Delegates.  Read the full reports.
