In response to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce’s request for suggestions to reform Medicare’s physician payment system, the American Medical Association (AMA) outlined several of its recommendations in a letter it sent to the committee.
The letter contained a framework developed by the AMA’s Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) Task Force, including:
- Immediate repeal of Medicare’s SGR formula
- A five-year period of statutorily set payment updates
- Transition to a variety of new payment models designed to improve patient care
The committee will hold a hearing on SGR reform on May 5, during which AMA president Cecil Wilson, MD, will present testimony on behalf of the AMA.
