AMA Letter Details Plan on Medicare Cuts

In response to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce’s request for suggestions to reform Medicare’s physician payment system, the American Medical Association (AMA) outlined several of its recommendations in a letter it sent to the committee.

The letter contained a framework developed by the AMA’s Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) Task Force, including:

  • Immediate repeal of Medicare’s SGR formula
  • A five-year period of statutorily set payment updates
  • Transition to a variety of new payment models designed to improve patient care

The committee will hold a hearing on SGR reform on May 5, during which AMA president Cecil Wilson, MD, will present testimony on behalf of the AMA.
