United Healthcare Medicare Advantage Plans to Require Radiology Preauthorization

United Healthcare will soon require preauthorization for radiology services for most of its Medicare Advantage plans offered by SecureHorizons® and Evercare®.

Beginning June 7, 2010, preauthorization will be required for CT scans, MRIs, MRAs, PET scans, and nuclear medicine studies. Advanced imaging services that take place in emergency rooms, observation units, urgent care facilities, or during inpatient stays do not require preauthorization.

To obtain preauthorization, visit www.unitedhealthcareonline.com, click on “notifications,” and then select “radiology notification and authorization submission and status” from the drop down menu. You also can call (866) 889-8054 or send a fax form to (866) 889-8061.

The change was made to keep Medicare Advantage plan policies in line with United Healthcare’s commercial programs.
