Physicians Outline ID Badge Concerns to Department of Health

Physicians have told us loud and clear that they are very frustrated with the new interim regulations requiring them to wear identification badges. The regulation also applies to other staff who provide direct patient care.

In response, the Pennsylvania Medical Society (PAMED) submitted a letter to the Pennsylvania Department of Health (DOH) outlining the concerns of physicians and including its recommendations to make the implementation process smoother. These included:

  • Key requirements, such as the size and location of the half inch strip of the practitioner’s title, should be repeated in the final regulations, regardless of whether they already appear in the statute.
  • DOH should provide better guidance about what titles should be used for other health workers not defined in the regulations.
  • DOH should provide an example of an acceptable badge that would meet the 2015 regulation and post more comprehensive guidance on its website.

PAMED has developed an easy-to-use template designed to meet all of the requirements outlined in the interim regulations. To have your badges professionally printed, use these guidelines to make sure your badge vendor is meeting the requirements.

PAMED member with questions on the ID badge regulations may contact our Division of Practice Economics and Payer Relations at (800) 228-7923, ext. 2644.
