Physicians and practice managers are often asked to provide references for former medical practice employees. They sometimes face a dilemma over whether to be truthful and accurate about an employee’s job performance or just verify dates of employment and last position held.
Such references are particularly troubling when an employer believes a former employee’s diagnostic or patient care skills are inadequate. This can raise patient safety issues, as in the case of a Pennsylvania nurse who pleaded guilty to multiple patient murders after finding work at 10 separate hospitals despite his troubled work history.
