Objectives
This monograph will review basic information and aspects to achieve the following learning objectives:
- Describe the current guidelines of screening mammograms supported by the American Cancer Society and the American Society of Breast Surgeons and the controversy involving the 2009 US Preventative Task Force report.
- Apply the American Cancer Society guidelines of using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for breast cancer screening in women at high risk for breast cancer.
- Apply the diagnostic triad, i.e., physical exam, radiographic imaging, and pathology (biopsy or fine needle aspiration (FNA) to provide anticipatory guidance and support to enable the patient and family success, along with communication skills, and strategies to promote the treatment algorithms.
- Apply the Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) lexicon used in breast imaging reports including mammogram, ultrasound, and MRI to guide management in your practice.
- Apply the principles of conventional clinical breast exam documentation to aid in evaluation of areas of clinical concern.
- Formulate a plan for practice improvement that optimizes outcomes in evaluation of common breast complaints.
