MSS Membership Benefits

Connect with other medical students, get help with student loans, and help steer the Pennsylvania Medical Society's policy direction by joining the Medical Student Section. See below for a full list of the benefits of MSS membership.

Skills nights

Peter Lund, MD, immediate past president of the Pennsylvania Medical Society, has conducted skills programs for medical students at various medical schools across the state.

After talking with students briefly about organized medicine, he proceeds with the interactive portion of the program. Dr. Lund instructs the students in basic knot-tying and surgical skills, generally with instructional assistance from residents and faculty of the institution.

Medical students, particularly those in their first and second years, really enjoy this hands-on learning activity. To request a program, email sbortner@pamedsoc.org.

Advocacy Day at the state capitol

The Medical Student Section and Resident and Fellow Section of the Pennsylvania Medical Society each spring hold Advocacy Day for residents, fellows, and medical students to visit Harrisburg. The young physicians and students meet with legislators to discuss their concerns about various health care policy issues and specific pending legislation. The evening before Advocacy Day, the Pennsylvania Medical Society holds a pre-Advocacy Day dinner meeting to prepare for the legislative visits the next day.

Docs in Hock
To manage student loan debt, students need to understand how repayment works and the problems many physicians encounter. "Docs in Hock," produced by the Pennsylvania Medical Society and the Association of American Medical Colleges, gives you key insights into organizing your loan records, knowing who owns and services your loan, various kinds of loans, and the amount you borrowed versus what your repayment will cost.

Student loans and scholarships

Through its student financial services programs, the Foundation of the Pennsylvania Medical Society helps medical students fund their dreams of becoming physicians. Foundation loans and scholarships are made possible by generous contributions from the Pennsylvania Medical Society, the Philadelphia County Medical Society, the Pennsylvania Medical Society Alliance, other county medical societies and alliances, physicians, and other friends of medicine.

Medical school loan forgiveness

The Pennsylvania Medical Society strongly supports legislation to relieve the heavy debt burden on physicians.

Pennsylvania Medical Society on Facebook

Students can keep up with the current events of the Pennsylvania Medical Society on Facebook—news, information, health care information, photos, and more.

Annual meeting of the Medical Student Section

The purpose of the section’s annual meeting, held during the State Society’s Annual Business Meeting in Hershey, is to hear reports on section and chapter activities, adopt resolutions for submission to the Pennsylvania Medical Society’s House of Delegates, and elect section officers. The 2012 Annual Meeting for the Medical Student Section will be held at the Hershey Lodge on Friday, October 26.
