Five PA Physicians Elected to AMA Board, Councils

Pennsylvania physicians will be well represented in organized medicine after the election of five Pennsylvania Medical Society (PAMED) members to high-ranking positions with the American Medical Association.

Physicians endorsed by PAMED who won election are:

  • Carl A. Sirio, MD, a critical care physician and internist from Pittsburgh, newly elected to the AMA’s Board of Trustees;
  • Andrew W. Gurman, MD, an Altoona hand surgeon, re-elected as vice speaker of the AMA House of Delegates;
  • Peter S. Lund, MD, a urologist from Erie, elected to his first term on the Council on Medical Service; and
  • Ronald J. Clearfield, MD, elected to the Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs.

Another Pennsylvania physician – Stephen R. Permut, MD, JD, a family medicine physician in Philadelphia and a resident of Delaware – was elected as a new member of the AMA Board. He was endorsed by the Delaware State Medical Society.

Dr. Sirio has served on the AMA Council on Medical Education for eight years and has represented the AMA on various medical education bodies and committees. He played an instrumental role in creating the Pittsburgh Regional Health Initiative, a group of physicians and hospitals from 40 institutions dedicated to improving patient care and safety.

Dr. Gurman, a former speaker of the PAMED House of Delegates, was re-elected for his fourth one-year term. He serves on the AMA board as part of his duties as vice speaker. He also is a liaison to the Board of Directors of the AMA Foundation, the organization’s non-profit charitable arm.

Dr. Lund is a former president of PAMED and is the founder of the Institute for Good Medicine of the Pennsylvania Medical Society. He chairs PAMED’s delegation to AMA House of Delegates meetings.

Dr. Clearfield, a retired radiologist who practiced in Westmoreland County, is a former speaker and vice speaker of the PAMED House of Delegates and member of the PAMED Board of Trustees.
