Local Physician Sworn in as 160th President of the Pennsylvania Medical Society

(Harrisburg, PA) James A. Goodyear, MD, a board-certified general surgeon from North Wales, was sworn in as the 160th president of the Pennsylvania Medical Society on October 24 during the organization’s annual statewide meeting held in Hershey, Pa.

Dr. Goodyear becomes the third president of the Pennsylvania Medical Society from Montgomery County since the organization’s founding in 1848. The others include Hiram Corson, MD, in 1852 and William W. Lander, MD, in 2005.

Swearing Dr. Goodyear into office was Bruce A. MacLeod, MD, chairman of the Pennsylvania Medical Society’s Board of Trustees and a practicing emergency medicine specialist in Allegheny County. More than 400 guests and dignitaries attended the ceremony including medical leadership from the New Jersey, Delaware, and New York state medical societies, as well as the Pennsylvania Osteopathic Medical Association, Pennsylvania Society of Physician Assistants, and Pennsylvania Bar Association.

Dr. Goodyear was elected vice president of the Pennsylvania Medical Society in 2007. At the Pennsylvania Medical Society, Dr. Goodyear has been a member of its delegation to the American Medical Association since 2004. He has chaired the society’s Commission on Health Care Facilities and its OMSS Governing Council. He also has served on the society’s Council on Governmental Affairs. In addition, he has been a member of the PAMPAC Board of Directors. Locally, he is a past president of the Montgomery County Medical Society.

He has been a member of the Pennsylvania Medical Society for nearly 20 years.

Dr. Goodyear practices general surgery in Lansdale through the North Penn Surgical Associates. He is the founder of the North Penn Hernia Institute. At Abington Health, Lansdale Hospital (formerly North Penn Hospital), Dr. Goodyear is a past chairman of the department of surgery. He is a member of the medical executive committee and chairman of the Organized Medical Staff Bylaws Committee. He also is a member of the Credentials Committee.

Dr. Goodyear earned a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from Temple University School of Pharmacy, and a medical degree from Temple University Medical School. He completed his residency at Abington Memorial Hospital.

A native of Warminster, Pa., currently he and his wife, Cathy, reside in North Wales. They have five grown daughters including Amy Chermela, an elementary school teacher; Laura Incorvia, a health and insurance benefits manager; Audrey McCarthy, a manager with AmerisourceBergan Pharmaceutical Services Provider; Katie Przasnyski, a school teacher and photographer; and Sarah Goodyear, MD, a physician and Pennsylvania Medical Society member.
