Only last week were Pennsylvania physicians staring down the barrel of a 10.6 percent cut in Medicare payment for services they provide. Needless to say, in a state like Pennsylvania that has one of the older populations in the country, a cut could have had devastating effects on the many physician offices statewide.
Fortunately, as the issue swelled to a head in Washington, DC, leaders in the US Senate heard the voices of our country’s patients and doctors, who raised concern for the future of health care. As a result, the senators went back to work to avoid this year’s cut. By a bipartisan majority of 69-30, our US Senate voted to stop the cut. Weeks earlier, the US House of Representatives also voted favorably, 355-59.
Both Senators Casey and Specter stepped up to the plate and voted with the majority. Pennsylvania’s patients and doctors appreciate their support.
Now the Pennsylvania Medical Society calls upon President Bush to also hear the voices of patients and doctors by signing the bill into law.
